Branch Summer Seminar

a.m. Civil Procedure Rules.

The morning session will cover the changes to the Civil Procedure Rules with effect from 26 April 1999. Our main speaker will be David Gwillim of Rowe & Maw, Solicitors. David is a Solicitor Advocate specialising in all aspects of construction litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. David is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Member of the Society of Construction Law and the Technology and Construction Court Solicitors' Association. He specialises in building and civil engineering disputes, acting on behalf of national and international contractors and sub-contractors, public authority employers, insurers and institutions. Typical issues concern procurement methods, defects in buildings, payment, insurance, liquidated damages, extensions of time and critical path analysis, statutory obligations, variations, professional indemnity and warranties. He has spoken on a regular basis at seminars for lawyers and for the construction industry and its professions. He is a contributor to Pittaway & Hammerton; Professional Negligence Cases published by Butterworths. David will be ably assisted by two members of the Branch Committee: Chris Gilbert from Steele & Co. and Peter Tunstill from Breeze & Wyles.

The afternoon session will be on the subject of "Dealing with Difficulty": a series of problems that may arise during the course of an arbitration and that will require resolution will be discussed. The afternoon session will be led by Dr. Francesco Mastrandrea, Chairman and Managing Director of Northcrofts Management Services Limited. Franco is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Quantity Surveying Division); a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (on the Institute's Panel); a Barrister-at-Law; a CEDR Accredited Mediator; and a Panel Adjudicator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
